Kate McGee, one of our two higher ed reporters at partner The Texas Tribune, is a finalist for an investigative reporting prize from the Institute for Nonprofit News.

McGee and her colleague James Barragán are recognized for their reporting on Texas A&M University. McGee’s coverage of the university’s botched hiring of a veteran Black journalist led to the resignation of the university’s president. She has also covered the impact of the state’s attacks on tenure and its ban on diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts.

This isn’t the first time McGee’s Texas A&M coverage has received accolades. The Education Writers Association in May named her one of the country’s top beat reporters.

INN will announce the award winners on Sept. 18 in Atlanta. Finalists competed among the largest-ever pool of entries: 626, up nearly 40% from 2023, INN said.

Open Campus and the Texas Tribune are both members of INN, a group of more than 450 nonprofit newsrooms dedicated to public service.
