Doug Lederman, a higher education expert with decades of experience as a founder, editor, speaker, and strategic adviser, has joined the Open Campus Board of Directors.

Doug co-founded Inside Higher Ed, an online news organization that now has more than 2 million monthly readers, in 2004 and served as editor until 2024. He continues to write and speak about the industry and advises companies and nonprofit organizations on strategy related to higher education.

Before starting Inside Higher Ed, Doug served in a variety of roles at The Chronicle of Higher Education. He began his career as a news clerk at The New York Times.

“Doug brings a wealth of experience at the intersection of journalism and higher education to our board,” said Scott Smallwood, co-founder and CEO at Open Campus. “He’s deeply knowledgeable about how the sector has transformed, what challenges it faces, and how to build new products that reach influential audiences.”

“I’m a big believer in Open Campus and its mission,” Lederman said. “Good local coverage of postsecondary education is more important than ever given the turbulent forces roiling colleges and the journalism industry, and I look forward to seeing if I can help the Open Campus team deepen and expand their already significant reach.”
