Defunding of student loan repayment program another hit to teachers amid state’s staffing shortage
The Winter-Reed Teacher Loan Repayment Program awards thousands each year, for up to three years, to teachers to help pay off college debt. Earlier this year, state lawmakers gave teachers a raise that was far smaller than originally promised, leaving many educators disappointed. Mississippi teachers are, on average, among the lowest paid in the country.
